Pike Pawnee Week

Pike Pawnee Week

September 30, 2024 to October 6, 2024

Did you know that the Zebulon Pike Trail runs through rural Webster County? Pike and his men built a camp and rifle pits near the largest settlement of the Kitkahahki band of Pawnee in the region. The region is considered the birthplace of civilization by the Pawnee.

We're celebrating by following Webster County's lead in designating Sept. 30th through October 6th as "Pike-Pawnee Week" to venerate the accomplishments of Pike and his men and recognize and honor the Pawnee settlement site. Learn more about the history of site, the "War Between Nebraska and Kansas" historical societies, and how it was rediscovered in this article

You can learn more about Pawnee settlements in the region by visiting the Pawnee Indian Museum Historic Site near Republic, KS (just down the Republican River, about 50 miles).

This year's celebrations are going to be limited to content on TikTok, Facebook and other social media. We hope to build this event in future years.
