Red Cloud's first fast-pitch softball players reunite to honor coach

RED CLOUD, Neb. (KOLN) - “Let her fly now. Let her fly,” hollered Cynthia Sims, mimicking her mother who coached softball in Red Cloud. “Don’t worry about a thing. You just get that bat up. You just keep that elbow up. Get that elbow up.”

These famous words ring in the hearts of athletes coached by Glenys Kay Figgins Cover. 

“She loved to whip out her rule book, and she would confront these men,” said Kathy Stoner, another daughter of Kay Cover. “And it was very empowering for us as girls to watch.”

Nebraskans were playing softball during the Great Depression and WWII, but the sport really gained popularity after Title IX was introduced in 1972. Cover organized the first fast-pitch softball teams in Red Cloud.
