The South Heartland District Health Department area (Webster, Nuckolls, Clay, and Adams Counties in Nebraska) has reported at least 6 positive cases of COVID-19, 3 of which are believed to be community spread. This means that Webster County is under a directed health measure until at least May 12th. A directed health measure means restaurants and bars can only do takeout, curbside or delivery and that there is now an enforceable order limiting gatherings to 10 people or less. As of 6:30pm on Wednesday, April 1st Nebraska has 214 cases and 5 deaths. Kansas has 482 cases and 10 deaths. Kansas is also under a stay at home directive while 41 counties in Nebraska (including Webster) are under a directed health measure. Travel to Red Cloud for anything other than work is not recommended at this time. We will update this page daily.

Due to heightened concerns surrounding COVID-19, the City of Red Cloud is taking precautions to best protect the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Effective immediately, the City Hall and the Community Center will be closed through at least April 7th.

Guide Rock, the only town in America with that name, is located in Webster County, on the north bank of the Republican River.  Guide Rock was named after a prominent rock bluff-Pa-Hur, which was an important landmark and guide to early trappers and the Pawnee Indians.  Guide Rock was settled in 1870.  The railroad was built through Guide Rock between 1881 and 1882.  In 1950, the Diversion Dam was erected 2.5 miles West of Guide Rock.

The Auld-Doudna Library, in Guide Rock, was a gift to the community by a former banker, Wm. Auld in memory of Nathan Doudna. The library has an extensive newspaper collection dating back to the turn of the 20th century.  Along with the library, the town also has a community center, a large park, and a fire hall.

The Guide Rock-Eckley Alumni banquet is held the Saturday of Memorial weekend every year.  Another event that takes place in Guide Rock every year is the Rockin’ G Arena’s horse show.  The horse show takes place on the Sunday of Father’s Day weekend every year.
