Webster County Courthouse
Webster County Courthouse

The Webster County Courthouse is a "County Citadel" type courthouse with Second Renaissance Revival architecture that was built in 1914. It is one of ten Nebraska courthouses designed by William F. Gernandt. Its design is similar to Gernandt's for the Dawson County Courthouse, which was built during 1913-14. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The courthouse is two stories tall with brownish brick (actually "Goldenrod Brick", from Omaha's Sunderland Brothers) walls, and with limestone trim. It sits on a raised basement made of rusticated brick and Bedford limestone.

Its NRHP nomination describes the main architectural feature of the courthouse:

The architect has expanded upon a form he used for his Dawson County Courthouse, stone-trimmed brick arcades between pilasters. For the Webster County Courthouse the arcades have become the dominant design feature, and arcaded pavilions occur on the south, east, and west facades. The round-arched brick arcades trimmed in stone spring from stone capitals of relatively simple brick pilasters. The arcade consists of eight arches on the main facade, and three on the sides where it projects more from the wall surface than does the main arcade. Tall and slightly arched parapets have a dentiled stone course that follows this arched shape. Below is a metal cornice featuring mutules with a row of dentils below. The forms further call attention to the arcades.

It was listed on the National Register in 1981. It was deemed significant for its architecture and for its role "as the focal point for the administration of local government and institutions in Webster County. It is a good example of public architecture in the community and contains good examples of design features and facilities distinctive to its design and use as a courthouse."

It is one of a number of NRHP-listed properties associated with Willa Cather and a scene from Cather's Pulitzer Prize winning novel One of Ours takes place in the Courthouse.

Webster County Historical Museum
Webster County Historical Museum

Housed in a 1909 classic revival style brick mansion, the Webster County Historical Museum is a beautiful landmark and an outstanding resource for learning about the area's rich pioneering and agricultural history. The four floors of the museum bring to life the early settlers of Webster County. It is a treasure trove of information about local families living in the Red Cloud and Guide Rock areas during the late 1800's and early 1900's. Items include books, diaries, Bibles, hymnals, paintings, clothing, and furniture. There are also schoolbooks and desks from the first school house in Webster County, which was opened in Guide Rock in 1867.

Mary Kingsley was the first teacher of the Guide Rock school, earning twelve dollars a month in salary. Photographs and a select few brochures and letters from Silas Garber are also available at the museum. Garber was one of the original settlers of Webster County and was the Governor of Nebraska from 1875-1879. There are a few photographs and personal accounts of the "Great Storm of Red Cloud," which happened in 1879, when a storm nearly destroyed the entire town. The majority of the town's buildings were leveled and there was over $10,000 in damages. Museum artifacts also include a 1904 Rumely steam engine and a 1910 Case threshing machine, along with other examples of early day farming machinery.

The paleontology exhibit, "Digging Through Time" showcases some of the wondrous fossil finds that have been discovered in Webster County. The musuem's genealogy department is a popular destination for those interested in learning more about their family tree. They have marriage announcements and obituaries that date back to the late 1800s. The department also has old copies of the Blue Hill Leader and the Webster County Argus available for review and research.

Willa Cather Childhood Home
Willa Cather Childhood Home

The Childhood Home, the treasure of our restored buildings, contains many family artifacts including furniture, canned goods, prints and artwork, and family photographs and books. Grandma Boak's room is exactly as described in "Old Mrs. Harris." Upstairs, a "story within itself," is young Willa's (and Thea Kronborg's in The Song of the Lark) small attic bedroom; Willa wallpapered this room herself, taking the wallpaper as pay for her work at Dr. Cook's drug store. The same rose-covered wallpaper is there today.

The Childhood Home was donated to the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and lovingly restored by Dr. Wilbur Bennett and his wife, Mildred Bennett, who founded the WCPM. Later, that organization would become the Willa Cather Foundation

Willa Cather Memorial Prairie
Willa Cather Memorial Prairie

The Willa Cather Memorial Prairie is a botanical treasure consisting of 612 acres of never-been-plowed native prairie. The Willa Cather Foundation is working to return this land to its 19th century conditions, a time before the encroachment of man and foreign plant species.

The importance of the prairie in shaping America's art, history, and culture has been lost to much of the world. Of the millions of acres of grasslands that once covered the continent, only a small percentage remains. In order to protect the last American prairies, extraordinary efforts must be made not only to preserve them, but to bring visitors to the prairie, to teach them the importance of this special ecosystem. As the largest relict prairie in six counties, the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie is the perfect setting for teaching in nature.

Birders will enjoy our special location which features many grassland species, including eastern and western meadowlarks, eastern and western king birds, upland plovers, wild turkeys, bobolinks and other New World blackbird species, vesper sparrows and their many related grassland sparrows, wood ducks and other migratory birds, and greater prairie chickens. The Cather Prairie is listed as a National Birding Site and is a partner site of the Chicken Dance Trail. We are also partners in the Great Plains Ecotourism Coalition.

The Cather Prairie also boasts an ever-changing tapestry of native grasses, flowers, and forbs. Some of our most notable species include big and little bluestem, side-oats, hairy, and blue grama grasses, indian and switch grasses, as well our native cool-season buffalo grass. The wildflower season stretches from April through October, beginning with the sedges and fringed puccoons, and finishing big with ten-petal mentzelia and several varieties of sunflowers and goldenrod. In between, primroses, asters, native thistles, prairie coneflower, echinacea, dalea, ironweed, and many others grace the edges of our visitor trails.

WPA Murals at the Red Cloud Post Office

The Red Cloud Post Office is home to three mural panels commissioned as WPA projects. Archie Musick, who studied under Thomas Hart Benton and Boardman Robinson, is the artist who was awarded this project. He aimed to explain through these paintings — “Loading Cattle,” “Stockade Builders,” and “Moving Westward” — the advent of white settlement, the movement of Indian tribes to the west, and the thriving industry of cattlemen.
