Theodore Wheeler: Book Talk and Signing (Veterans Day Event)

November 12, 2018

4pm-5:30pm, Red Cloud Opera House

In honor of Veterans Day, on Monday, November 12, Nebraska author Theodore Wheeler will give a book talk and signing in the Red Cloud Opera House gallery regarding his novel, "Kings of Broken Things" [Little A: 2017]. Set after World War I, this historical novel focuses on the return of veterans to Omaha and emergent racial tensions. "The Lincoln Journal Star" reviewed the book as “A subtly powerful novel that sneaks up on the reader…Consider these damaged characters, a torched courthouse, and a dark stain on Omaha’s history. Among these broken things, Wheeler is crowned royalty.”

"Kings of Broken Things" is an immigrant coming-of-age novel that's set amid the domestic strife of World War I, the machine-boss era of politics in Nebraska, and events surrounding the lynching of Will Brown during the Omaha race riot of 1919.

Wheeler is a fiction writer, college professor, and legal reporter from Omaha. His short stories have appeared widely in such literary journals such as "The Kenyon Review." This is his first novel for which Wheeler received the 2018 Nebraska Book Award for Fiction Honor, which will be awarded at a ceremony on December 1st in Lincoln.
