Red Cloud Volunteer Fire Department
Red Cloud Volunteer Fire Department

Red Cloud is fortunate to have a volunteer fire department to serve the city and the surrounding countryside. There are twenty-five volunteer fire fighters on the Red Cloud Fire Department.  The fire district extends 8 miles north, 6 miles south, 5 miles east, and 8 miles west of Red Cloud for a total of 182 sq. miles.  Several members of the department attend fire school each year to improve their skills and knowledge to better serve and protect the community.

Members of the fire department hold meetings on the first Thursday of each month.  In addition to their community service, the Firemen host their annual Soup and Hamburger Feed in March and prepare and serve the popular beef barbeque at the annual Street Car Days celebration.

Republican River
Republican River
The Republican River is an ideal location for viewing wildlife. Species include eagle, turkey, upland birds, deer, and bobcat. The chalk cliffs are a naturally occurring geological feature, exposed by the action of the Republican River. Picturesque hills adorn the south side of the river and many great camping, hunting, and fishing possibilities are available.

The river provides scenic beauty, irrigation, and recreation. Anglers enjoy fishing the river and catch largemouth bass, panfish, and channel catfish among other species. In addition to the Republican, Red Cloud is close to two large lakes: Lovewell State Recreation (near Webber, KS) and Harlan County Reservoir (near Republican City, NE). The Elm Creek and Indian Creek Pond State Wildlife Management Areas are also stocked regularly.

St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Church
St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Church

It was here that Annie Pavelka, the prototype for Ántonia, baptized her baby and later married. The building, erected in 1883 and used until 1903, later became a residential home. Visitors will notice the "poor man's stained glass" windows and the lack of a bell in the belfry. These are important reminders of the economic divisions in Red Cloud. The priest didn't live in Red Cloud, instead traveling by train to give Mass. The train engineer would blow the whistle in a special way if the priest was aboard to let the parishioners know that Mass was about to begin. The building was dedicated and consecrated in 1970. St.Juliana was restored and is managed and maintained by the Willa Cather Foundation.

Starke Round Barn
Starke Round Barn

The Starke Round Barn is a historic and engineering marvel. More than one hundred years old, the barn is massive in size but is held together without nails or pegs of any kind. Measuring 130 feet in diameter and three stories in height, the structure is constructed with balloon framing and heavy timber supports. The Starke Brothers, Conrad, Ernest, William  and Chris, who came to Nebraska from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, built the Starke Barn in 1902-1903. The top level of the structure was used for hay storage, the main level of the barn was for machinery storage, and grain bins were eventually added around the silo. The lower level was used for livestock -- the southern end for cows and the northern end for horses. The Starke Round Barn is the state's largest and one of the largest in the nation. This extraordinary barn was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1972.

Teammates
Teammates

The Teammates Mentoring Program was founded by Tom and Nancy Osborne in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to school aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth meet one hour per week with a caring adult who serves as a mentor. Mentors are volunteers from the community who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the life of a young person. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose, and vision. Some of their activities include: weekly meetings with students, a kickoff picnic before the start of school, Recognition Night, One Hour Walk fund raiser, and kayaking.

Officers are President, Marilyn Fritson; Vice President, Eva Worman; Secretary, Val Horne; and Treasurer, Marcy Thompson. The board meets the first Monday of the month. For more information about the program or to apply to become a mentor, contact Jan Harvey, TeamMates Coordinator, at 402.746.3560 (work) or 402.746.2639 (home).

Mission: The program's mission is to positively impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential through mentoring.
